Which one costs less?

Mullvad month to month, NordVPN over the first two years — then Mullvad again for as long as you keep the subscription.

The rolling monthly prices are €5 — about $5.71, going by the rate on Mullvad’s pricing page at the 23 Jul 2026 check — against $14.99 for NordVPN Basic, so Mullvad costs less than half as much. Commit long-term and the order flips: NordVPN’s two-year deal bills $94.23 for the first 27 months, while 27 months of Mullvad costs €135, about $154 — roughly $60 more.

The flip doesn’t hold. After the intro term, NordVPN Basic’s renewal is $139.08 a year — about $11.59 a month, more than triple the advertised $3.49. Mullvad has no renewal jump to disclose; the only discount that exists anywhere on its pricing page is 10% off for paying with cryptocurrency. Spread NordVPN’s renewal across the year and the running totals cross a little past the three-year mark; every year after that, Mullvad costs about $70 less. One caveat — Mullvad’s euro billing means the dollar figures track the exchange rate.

Those NordVPN figures buy Basic, the VPN-only tier. Complete and Prime bundle dark web monitoring, antivirus, a password manager, 1 TB of cloud storage, and — on Prime — identity-theft insurance, at $19.99 and $29.99 a month on the rolling plan.

Refund windows differ too. NordVPN puts a 30-day money-back guarantee on every plan, with App Store purchases refunded through Apple. Mullvad’s window is 14 days, valid only for credit card, PayPal, Google Play, Swish, and bank-wire payments — cash is barred by anti-money-laundering rules, and cryptocurrency, vouchers, and Apple App Store purchases fall outside the guarantee as well. Neither has a free plan: NordVPN’s FAQ points to a 3-day free trial on Android only, and Mullvad’s pricing FAQ states plainly that no free plan is coming.

Which one is more anonymous?

Mullvad, by a wide margin — the numbered account gives it nothing to know about you, and paying with cash sent by post or with Monero (that 10% crypto discount included) keeps the payment as blank as the account; the full design is in our Mullvad review. A NordVPN account runs through an email address, which is the gap vpnMentor and Cybernews flag first when they call Mullvad the more privacy-focused service.

An anonymous sign-up and a no-logs policy are different claims, though, and on the second the two are closer. NordVPN operates from Panama and states that no data-retention laws there would apply to VPN providers. Mullvad VPN AB sits under Swedish law, which its legal page notes leaves VPN providers outside the LEK data-retention rules. Both publish no-logs policies backed by outside engagements — covered next — and both appear in our most private VPN rankings.

Whose audit record is stronger?

On formal no-logs attestations, NordVPN. Deloitte Lithuania completed its sixth independent no-logs verification in December 2025 — an ISAE 3000 (Revised) assurance engagement conducted 10 Nov–12 Dec 2025, report issued 12 Dec 2025 — following PwC Switzerland in 2018 and 2020 and Deloitte engagements in 2022, 2023, and 2024. The catch: the full report is readable only after logging in to a Nord Account.

For Mullvad, the freshest relevant work is Cure53’s fourth infrastructure audit (June 2024). Scoped to “anything that would impact privacy”, it probed for ways to break a user’s traffic anonymity and identified none — adversarial and useful, but a security audit, not a no-logs attestation of the Deloitte kind. On hardware the two agree more than they differ. NordVPN’s blog states it runs only diskless RAM-based servers; Mullvad’s fleet likewise keeps nothing on disk, each machine booting through the company’s own STBoot loader. Mullvad adds one distinction NordVPN doesn’t match: no virtual locations — its hardware, owned or rented outright, is physically in every city on the list, while NordVPN’s 149-country network mixes physical and virtual locations.

What do speed and streaming tests say?

Comparisons at Cybernews and Cloudwards report NordVPN faster overall, usually crediting NordLynx, though some of the same comparisons note slightly lower latency from Mullvad on nearby servers. Treat those as the outlets’ findings — and note that NordVPN is the easier one to check on your own connection, since every plan carries the 30-day guarantee while Mullvad’s refund window is 14 days and skips cash and crypto payments.

For streaming the reported gap is wider: vpnMentor and Security.org describe NordVPN working with major platforms — Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Max — while calling Mullvad unreliable for unblocking, Netflix US included.

What about protocols, devices, and torrenting?

Mullvad’s protocol menu has one item. OpenVPN was retired on 15 Jan 2026 — pulled from clients and servers alike — cutting off routers and third-party configurations that relied on it; what remains is WireGuard, running quantum-resistant tunnels and DAITA traffic obfuscation. NordVPN’s default is NordLynx — WireGuard reworked with its own double-NAT system, plus post-quantum encryption since 2025 — and OpenVPN remains available as an alternative.
