How private is Surfshark?

The infrastructure story is strong. Every server in Surfshark’s fleet is RAM-only, which means all data is erased on each reboot and nothing is written to disk. The whole network supports WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN — three well-studied protocols, no proprietary lock-in.

The corporate story is messier. Surfshark B.V. is registered in Amsterdam, but its terms of service are expressly governed by British Virgin Islands law — the terms themselves note this is “the same as it was before we moved to the Netherlands”. So your contract sits under BVI law while the company operates from an EU member state. That is not a red flag, but it is less clean than NordVPN’s Panama base or Proton’s Swiss one, and worth knowing before you rely on jurisdiction as a selling point.

Ownership matters too: Surfshark merged with Nord Security, NordVPN’s parent company, in Feb 2022. Both firms say they continue to operate autonomously on separate infrastructure. Practically, two of the market’s biggest “rivals” share a parent.

What does the Deloitte audit actually cover?

Surfshark’s no-logs policy passed a Deloitte assurance engagement under the ISAE 3000 standard, announced 16 Jun 2025 and updated 26 Nov 2025. It is the company’s second engagement, after the first no-logs audit in Jan 2023. A recent big-four check of the exact claim that matters — whether the provider logs your activity — is the right kind of evidence.

The catch: the detailed reports (2023 and 2025) are not public. They are only accessible to paying customers who log in to their Surfshark account. Compare Proton VPN, which publishes its Securitum audit reports in full, five years running. You can verify Deloitte’s conclusion exists; you cannot read its scope before you buy. Three things the checkout page underplays:

• The renewal jump is steep. $79.00 a year works out to about $6.58 a month — roughly 2.6 times the intro rate. The schedule is published on Surfshark’s renewal-price page, which is more transparent than many rivals, but the jump is real. Set a reminder before month 27.
• The monthly plan is the priciest we track. At $16.45, Surfshark’s rolling monthly rate is the highest of the eight providers in our dataset — above NordVPN and ExpressVPN at $14.99. Buy the long term or buy elsewhere.
• Renewal prices can vary by user. Surfshark’s terms reserve the right to A/B price testing: “the displayed renewal prices may be subject to Testing”. The price you renew at may not be the price someone else sees.

The 30-day money-back guarantee applies to your initial purchase only — recurring payments are non-refundable. It also excludes purchases through resellers other than Paddle, Google Play, or Cleverbridge, prepaid and gift cards, anonymous Dedicated IP, and Alternative Number purchases. A 12-month term exists too; Surfshark doesn’t publish its price consistently, so it stays out of the table.

There is no free tier. A 7-day free trial is available on the 12- and 24-month plans only: it is capped at 3 devices, requires a payment method, and auto-charges the full plan when the week ends.

What do you get for the money?

The headline feature is unlimited simultaneous connections on every paid plan — of the eight providers in our dataset, only Private Internet Access and Windscribe match it. One subscription genuinely covers a whole household’s phones, laptops, and TVs; only the free trial is capped at 3 devices.

The network is 4,500+ servers across 100 countries, all upgraded to 10 Gbps ports, with WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN available everywhere. That country count is solid, though NordVPN lists 149 countries and Proton VPN’s live server list showed 148.

Surfshark also sells two bigger bundles: One adds antivirus, data-breach monitoring, and private search tools, and One+ adds data removal, per PCMag’s and PCWorld’s plan breakdowns. Their prices vary by term; this review rates the Starter VPN plan alone.

How does it handle speed and streaming?

VPN Picks has not run its own benchmarks, so here is the third-party consensus, attributed. TechRadar’s review highlights Surfshark’s streaming unblocking as a strength, and streaming is the use case reviewers most often recommend it for. PCMag’s testing found middling upload performance and flagged a tunnel shutdown issue, and Forbes Advisor reported connection drops in its review. Reviewers also mention extras such as CleanWeb ad blocking, Smart DNS, and split tunneling.

The honest read: consistently good reports for streaming access, mixed reports for upload speeds and connection stability. If your use case is seeding or video calls all day, that upload caveat matters more than the headline download numbers.
